Un alto funcionario del gobierno de Donald Trump restó importancia este domingo a un desfile de supremacistas blancos realizado la víspera en Washington por los 250 años de Estados Unidos, y subrayó que la libertad de expresión está amparada por la Constitución.

El sábado, mientras los estadounidenses celebraban la Declaración de Independencia de 1776, cientos de personas con el rostro cubierto, algunas con banderas confederadas y otras con emblemas del movimiento supremacista Patriot Front, marcharon por zonas de la capital gritando "¡Recuperemos Estados Unidos!".

"Desde luego, lo que ellos defienden es algo con lo que yo jamás podría estar de acuerdo. Pero uno de los principios fundamentales de Estados Unidos, que hace que la democracia sea desordenada, es la libertad de expresión", declaró el domingo el secretario del Interior, Doug Burgum, a la cadena CNN.

Al ser consultado si condenaría al grupo y lo que representa, y si instaría al presidente Trump a hacer lo mismo, Burgum midió sus palabras.

"Hay muchas cosas que veo que personalmente podría considerar ofensivas y reprobables. Pero en Estados Unidos, la libertad de expresión está permitida", añadió, para luego arremeter contra candidatos progresistas que se presentaban a las elecciones calificándolos de "comunistas".

Vestidos con pantalones y gorras color caqui y camisas azul oscuro, los enmascarados abarrotaron el sábado el sistema de metro de la ciudad, se congregaron frente a la estación de tren Union Station y marcharon luego hacia la zona del Congreso. Según los informes, iban dirigidos por el fundador del grupo neofascista Patriot Front, Thomas Rousseau.

El Departamento de Policía Metropolitana (MPD) de Washington dijo que el grupo marchó brevemente por barrios alrededor del Capitolio y abandonó la ciudad antes de las 11H00 de la mañana.

"El MPD reconoce el derecho de las personas a expresar sus opiniones de forma pacífica y sigue comprometido con mantener la seguridad y la protección pública para los residentes y visitantes" de la ciudad, dijo una portavoz de la policía en un comunicado.

Patriot Front se fundó tras la concentración de 2017 "Unite the Right", que reunió a nacionalistas blancos de todo el país en Charlottesville, Virginia.

Esa manifestación culminó cuando un declarado supremacista blanco embistió con un automóvil a un grupo de contra-manifestantes. Una mujer murió y 19 personas resultaron heridas.

Trump tardó 48 horas en reaccionar ante la violencia y luego afirmó que había "gente muy buena en ambos lados" de las protestas, lo que provocó amplias críticas.
